Furniture Friday #7 and Link Party

Welcome to Furniture Friday dolls.  It's been an uneventful week as the weather has been California crazy. For you non Californians, crazy california weather includes rain, cloudiness, cool breeze, sun, then overcast, then rain, etc. etc.  I really shouldn't be complaining as I would've given my left arm for weather like this last year when I was living in Cincinnati, but it does put a damper on the projects.

Elaine and I were lucky to find enough sun to get two projects done.  First, Elaine painted this dresser with great lines.  Here is what it looked like before.

She used a red primer and a black paint and then distressed it to show through some of the red.  We call it the Black Pearl Dresser.

and remember that other metallic project I promised you?  Well here it is....

Unfortunately I did not snap a before picture, but it looked very similar to this dresser which I did another metallic finish on.

This time I used Rustoleum Navy Blue on it, but it looks more cobalt and added the metallic glaze in a straight motion.

Why I Love Metallic Glaze

First of all, let me ask you when you get into something, I mean REALLY into something, don't you continue doing it?  Lets start with your hair, you find a style and you wear it like that for weeks, or the comfort of those favorite pair of jeans.  Yea...that's what I thought.

Well for me the same goes with my painting projects.  When I get into a certain look, I keep doing it, especially when that look is flying off the shelves.  Well, most recently I'm in to metallic glaze.  Here is what I love about it.  It not only distresses, but it gives your paint a shimmer.  That's right girls...we all love glitter and shimmer, it's part of the glam effect.  Next, it is easy to apply: Just rub it on in a circle, straight, randomly, whatever you want to get the look that you want.  Third, it allows you to go bold because it tones down your color and yet gives it a wow factor.

I also love how metallic glaze brings out the details, like if you have an ornate part in your furniture you can really highlight it.

I personally have been using Martha Stewart Metallic Bronze lately, but I'm going to start trying other colors.

Mid Century Madness

I always feel sorry for those Danish modern dressers from the midcentury that got a little too much love.  It's like they are tossed out as rejects who didn't make it into a million dollar collection.  I mean, I get it, it's all about those mint midcentury show pieces, but what do you do when your show piece didn't win the show down.

Paint it of course!!  In order to keep the integrity of this piece we decided to leave the drawer fronts alone, imperfections and all.  I love the masculinity of this dresser and the clean modern lines.  Unfortunately once again, I didn't snap any before pictures, but I hope you like how it turned out.

I used a fern green color to compliment the walnut tones.

If you look very close you can see where there is imperfection, but that gives it all the more character, and to tell the truth it was in pretty good shape when we got it.

Can anyone say Mad Men.

It's All About Bright Dressers

So last week was such a boring week.  We pretty much worked on cleaning out the garage, shopping, and getting organized.  Plus in between I had a few Real Estate meetings.  For some reason I was up to a little creativity this weekend so we stayed home and worked (even with the kiddies around).  It became the Bright Dresser Weekend.  Dresser #1 we like to call The Meadows of Provence Dresser.  Decided to go with a bright yellow and a dark stain.  It so reminds me of a wheat field or something, hence the name.

Dresser #2 we call the Princess Heirloom Dresser.  It was an antique piece we got from somebody who had it in their family for years, but unfortunately it needed refinishing and they didn't know how to begin.   So they sold it to us.  I just love pink dressers, I did a custom one a while back for a little girl and it got rave reviews.  So when I saw this antique beauty I knew that  it wanted to wear pink too.

Trash to Treasured Wedding Gift

I'm so sorry.  I totally missed show off Sundays this week.  I've been packing all weekend and just have the basement left.  After packing comes organizing for Saturdays garage sale.

I thought I'd share this dresser that I did for a friend's wedding exactly a month ago today.  Her then fiance found this baby in the TRASH.  Most of the drawers were broken and the paint was pretty badly stained.  When I heard the news of this rescued "first" dresser I thought that in addition to buying a traditional wedding gift I would fix up the dresser for the bride and groom as a housewarming gift. I have to admit I've never repaired broken drawers before, but I knew I was up to the task.  Plus it was a Broyhill Dresser, which I thought would be worth repairing.

I decided to prime the dresser first before I tackled the mess with the drawers.

I have to admit I didn't even own clamps. I found these amazing band clamps at Home Depot that wrapped around and adjusted to any size.  I glued the drawers together and wrapped them in these band clamps and let each of them sit for 24 hours.  Then off to primer.

I used a silver metallic spray paint by Valspar and covered the dresser with two coats, then I used wipe on poly to seal.  The bride got some amazing knobs at Hobby Lobby that finished off the look.  I love how it came out.

Custom Dresser Complete

Another busy weekend just flew by.  Got two bedrooms painted and finished one of my custom dresser orders.  This cute little dresser is going to North Carolina for a 2-year-old little girl.  I just love custom orders because when I know a little about who it is going to, I sink a little extra heart into it.

The dresser is an antique, it came from the middle of Kentucky.  I was lucky enough to meet the guy who sold it to me since he works near Cincinnati and was able to deliver it,  When I saw the Craigslist posting I knew it was the one.

So I did my thing.  I prepped, primed, painted, and distressed.

I hope little Emma will love it as much as I do.

Coral Mirrored Credenza- Feature Friday

So I am actually in love with this piece of furniture.  I just love mirrored furniture, and this dresser/ credenza really knocks my socks off.

Amazing right?  She used Krylons Secret Color Coral Isle.  I'm totally going to order some.  This color is gorgeous.  She wrote a whole post on how to get Krylons secret colors.

You must visit Vintage Revivals for complete DIY instructions.  I guess until I meet Coral Isle, I won't be able to dump Watermelon (my current color of choice).  I hope we can stay friends after the break-up.
