Painted Chair

I've seen painted chairs all over the internet.  Actually Kristy at Hyphen Interiors did one a long time ago that I fell in love with.  I had planned to try it, but could never find the right chair.  Then when I did find the right chair I decided it needed to be reupholstered because there was a tear on the side.  So I got an estimate, $300 bucks?  OUCH!!  Well, I went back to Kristy's tutorial I discovered Simply Spray, which is a fabric spray paint. She was doing a series about trying this as an alternative to her original method.  They also make larger sizes for upholstery.  I just had to try it, it looked easy enough.  So I ordered 3 bottles in Caribbean Blue.

Would there be any hope for this worn chair that hadn't been upholstered since 1975?

and what would I do about the tear?

It took me 3 cans to do the front, it was really easy too.  The only thing is the fabric that this chair has feels kind of stiff, but it felt stiff before so I'm not sure it is the paint.

Here it is!!!  I'm so excited...

So the solution was to cover the sides with a great contrasting fabric.  I ordered this wonderful fabric from Fabrics By The Yard on Etsy.  It was super affordable and  perfect for what I wanted.

I also had this pillow I picked up at Ross for $3.99, but I wanted to add some pizazz to it, so I sewed a rectangle and stitched it onto the pillow.

Project total: $118

Chair- $50
Paint- $44
Pillow-$4
Fabric- $20
Paint- on hand

Much better than $350.  I'm happy.

  7. What a great Transformation, so Bohemian Chic, I Love it! I too have been thinking that the Solution to the problem of soiled or worn fav chairs might be this Painted Upholstery Trend. Can't afford to slipcover or re-upholster and am so tired of retucking the Exotic Fabric Drapes which currently hide the stains the G-Kids and Fur Babies made over the years. After seeing your bold Transformation I'm jazzed that this would work for me... BTW: Was there a spray to adhere the new Fabric parts? Because I would envision a Carol Hicks-Bolton Style Transformation with Exotic Fabrics and Paint, but I don't want to do a lot of sewing.

Thanks for Sharing... Blessings from the Arizona Desert... Dawn... The Bohemian

  8. Thanks all. Dawn, you can buy upholstery adhesive. I've seen it as Joanns, but did not use it. Instead I just stapled the fabric around and added a trim to the edges. As for the sides I did sew 2 straightish lines to make sure I had enough fabric to go all the way around (I am not a sewer either). Good luck with your project....mONICa
